Concept
Yellow Pulse is a commercial development in the ‘Porte des Alpes’ district in the south-east suburbs of Lyon, in an area targeted for urban renewal. Arte Charpentier were responsible for the refurbishment of a major shopping centre on the site involving the treatment of façades, the internal shopping gallery, and external landscaping, and are now involved on the design of a new commercial property as an extension of the existing buildings which will form the first of two phases of the Yellow Pulse development. The scheme will comprise retail outlets of small to medium size, an urban farm at roof level, a linear shopping concourse, or strip mall, with 4 medium-size outlets, and external landscaping including access to the roof terrace.
Program
The scope of the landscaping includes the upgrading of parking areas, the creation of entrance forecourts, the improvement of access across the site, and the provision of pedestrian and cycle routes. The planting strategy retains the significant elements of the existing landscape such as the two tree-lined alleys leading from Boulevard André Boulloche to the entrance of the existing shopping centre. On a wider scale, it extends the natural areas contingent to the site.
The entrance forecourt on the west side is finished in textured in-situ concrete and dotted with tall trees, and on the east side, the forecourt is finished in asphalt with a motif in white resin and rows of tall trees. The two areas are linked by a footpath forming a wide band of paving laid on a bed of sand similar to existing areas. The same treatment is also used for the strip mall.
At roof terrace level, public areas include a pump track, a zen garden, a children’s playground, and general relaxation areas. Composite-timber decking is employed generally for the floor and for raised planters which also serve as benches. On the north side of the roof terrace, an area has been set aside for the future urban farm.
In the external parking areas, a mix of planting strategies create different ambiances to facilitate visitor orientation, such as the golden copses, the flower meadows, the flowering groves and silver groves, and the tall tree groves.
