The site, on the corner of rue Sarah Bernhardt and Mail Camille du Gast, is irregular in shape, and this influences the building form. Overhanging balconies and ‘sharp’ angles give a dynamic edge to what is, in other respects, a more traditional building. The whole is treated as two separate entities with a 2-storey glazed entrance hall forming the intersection between the two halves. This semi-private area leads through to the internal landscaped garden and gives access to the two stair wells which are separated by a decorative structure. The ground floor storey facing the garden is set back from the facade, so that the overhanging upper levels seem to float.
The brief called for the design and construction of 67 flats, of which 39 are part of a home-ownership scheme, and 28 are part of a subsidized home-ownership scheme. Hence the articulation of the building consisting of two parts. There are two floors of car parking. The total floor area is 4500m² and its height is limited to 24m.
The main body of the building, of over six storeys, respects the street alignment and is finished in a sober pale stone-coloured render. It is the balconies, the recesses and the green-tinted laminated panels which give the building its movement. The corner facing the Mail, a pedestrian promenade, is marked by a 7-storey tower, finished in embossed concrete, adorned with an animated Reckli-type pattern. This contrasts with the dark grey lacquered aluminium metalwork. Window frames are a mixture of wood and aluminium and balustrades are glazed panels. The two-storey attic level on one side of the building, containing duplex flats, consists of two pointed volumes. These, clad in pine finished laminated panels, differentiate once again between the two parts of the building. The majority of roof terraces are planted, and a metal resin is used for other roof areas.
