Concept
Located in the valley between the heights of Romainville and Montmartre, the site of La Chapelle has been, since the 19th century, the ideal route for freight travelling by rail from Paris to the north. When freight transport ceased in the mid1980s, the site was incorporated into the Grand Projet de Renouvellement Urbain de Paris urban renewal strategy, leading to an urban renewal project in 2008.
The site, of 5200m², is situated at the north-west corner of La Chapelle International Development Zone, in a new quarter undergoing transformation. Comprising an office building and a gym, it sits at the angle between Boulevard Ney and a new road within the development zone.
Facing Boulevard Ney, the main part of the building appears as two blocks separated by about 14m, with the gym facing the new road. Planted terraces, sculpted from the facade, articulate the massing, opening up views to and from the building into the distance.
The main aims of the scheme are two-fold; the first is to create a landmark at the northern entrance to the new quarter, and the second is to articulate the transition from the public to the private domain. This enables the site to integrate seamlessly with the daily activity of the new area, and at the same time contributes to its composition. The multi-faceted building form enriches the architectural experience and provides a rapport with adjacent buildings and spaces.
The project, besides its architectural and environmental qualities, provides a quality working environment for 1360 staff, with flexible, efficiently-designed spaces to encourage team interaction and collaboration. The interiors are comfortable and welcoming and are organised in an attractive variety of layouts.
Program
The building facades, composed of a continuous rhythm of extruded aluminium profiles of varying colours, change character with a shifting viewpoint, giving the building a dynamic yet homogeneous appearance.
The glazed double-height hallway, provides a visual link between the entrance court, the garden at the lower level, the adjacent Petit Ceinture railway line and the Boulevard which passes in front. This generous, transparent volume acts as the building’s centre of gravity, welcoming and redirecting users and visitors. The adjoining cafeteria, which appears as an extension of the Place Active, offers a lively ambiance throughout the day.
The inter-company restaurant, situated at the sunken garden level, has a seating capacity of 240 and can serve up to 600 meals. This flexible space, accessible outside of meal times, serves as a place for informal working meetings and co-working, convivial and conducive to interaction and exchange.
The project is characterised by the presence of green landscaping at all levels of the building, creating a network of biodiversity across the site. The stepping up of green terraces from the sunken garden to the rooftop results in a veritable green lung in a dense urban setting.
