“The nature and vegetation outside classrooms have a direct impact on children. According to the concept of biophilia, this accelerates learning and improves student success rates.”

Elementary School Pont de Pierre Bobigny, France - 2020

Concept

The world of the Asterix and Obelix comic books guided the architectural concept and volumetric principles, given that the school is located in the Pont de Pierre neighborhood, the birthplace of Asterix, the creation of Albert Uderzo and René Goscinny. The classrooms are the village huts, autonomous, modular, and interconnected, arranged along the courtyard representing the village square. The cafeteria becomes the Banquet, and the entrance is highlighted by a stylized menhir.

The elementary school addresses three issues: architectural, contextual, and environmental, as much for its educational function as for its social and political function.

Architecture plays an essential role in children’s cognitive and emotional development, and the orientation of classrooms and the use of light influence the ecosystem and well-being at school.

This project creates synergy between the interior and exterior of the school and integrates plants into the playground, which are direct extensions of the classrooms, thus promoting learning through biophilia.

Educational workshop

In order to better understand how children use playgrounds, we held a co-design workshop with a group of children (aged 6 to 11). The elements that emerged from this exchange form the common thread running through the spatial organization of the proposed project.

The elongated shape of the playground allows for a fluid sequence of activities that follow on from one another and intermingle, creating a variety of atmospheres.

The entire space is designed to be easily supervised from a single point, with no blind spots. In addition, the layout of the different spaces, with no permanent central sports area, aims to ensure equal use of the playground by boys and girls
