The Citizen's Center

Located between the Yangtze River and existing ponds, the project creates a “sponge city” where landscape, water, and architecture intertwine. Inspired by traditional Wuhan architecture, its wooden structure and bioclimatic features make it a sustainable, open building with a low carbon footprint.

Concept

Located in the heart of an exceptional area, this project draws on the combined presence of the Yangtze River, existing ponds, and the metro station to create a true “sponge city” where landscape and architecture intertwine.

A main axis directly connects the city to the river and organizes a sequence of three large public halls: the Maple Hall on the metro side, the Administrative Hall in the center, and the Yangtze Hall on the riverbank side. This composition creates an open and permeable urban continuity, deeply rooted in its context.

The deliberately reduced building footprint frees up vast areas of open ground, preserves the ponds, and fosters an active landscape grid capable of managing and harnessing stormwater.

Inspired by traditional Wuhan architecture, the design incorporates courtyards, natural ventilation, and a large “Huading” roof that provides shade, ventilation, and energy efficiency.

The glued-laminated timber structure, bioclimatic features, and photovoltaic generation contribute to a building with a very low carbon footprint, serving as a model for the Automotive Valley and a symbol of the local energy transition.

Designed as an open, flexible, and sustainable community hub, the architecture integrates major infrastructure, nature, and public space to propel Wuhan toward a resilient future, connected to both the river and the world.
