Cotonou, Benin – May 2025: The Arte Charpentier teams recently visited the construction site of the Général Mathieu Kérékou (GMK) Commercial and Sports Complex in Cotonou, a flagship urban project scheduled for completion in August 2025.
This visit marks a key milestone in the development of a major infrastructure project at the heart of Benin’s economic capital. As part of a broader urban renewal strategy, the GMK Complex covers 45,000 m² and aims to become a new commercial and social anchor for the city.

A multifunctional hub for urban life
Designed to support economic growth, urban vibrancy, and social inclusion, the GMK Hub integrates a variety of programs:
-
Over 1,500 commercial units: including shops, market stalls, and restaurants;
-
An urban park and public agora: offering green space and civic engagement;
-
A 3,000-space parking facility: to ease urban mobility and access;
-
Sports facilities built to international standards, promoting both daily practice and major events.
The project is part of the Government of Benin’s ambition to position the country as a leading economic and tourism hub in West Africa, by equipping its cities with modern, inclusive, and sustainable infrastructure.
A collaborative project rooted in local context
Arte Charpentier leads the architectural design in close collaboration with our local partner, Cabinet d’Architecture TRIUMPHUS, responsible for the executive direction of the works.
