Concept
The “Carre de Soie” shopping and leisure centre, on the outskirts of Lyon, designed by architects Faulkner & Browns and realized by Arte Charpentier, takes its identity from its wooden outer skin which peels off to form undulating canopies over the outside shopping areas. Floating like ribbons, these waves evoke the silk which gave its name to this new district of Lyon, a former site of the silk and textile industry.
Program
Situated in a developing industrial zone, “Carre de Soie” is the first step in a large urban restructuring project for the city of Lyon. The 65 500m² scheme includes leisure activities, a multiplex of 15 cinema auditoria, indoor and outdoor activities as well as a hippodrome.
The 31 000m² of supermarket space and 11 500m² of retail and restaurants are laid out, on two floors, to either side of an external shopping promenade or ‘street’, and a footbridge links the site, via a canal-side footpath, with the nearby public transport hub.
