Concept
The concept imagined by Arte Charpentier Architects is inspired by the archaeological footprint of ‘solar man’. It is rooted in tradition and built upon the founding myths of Kazakhstan. From Astana will emanate a new vision of modernity for a new humanity based on solidarity, love and brotherhood.
Astana EXPO 2017 will be the meeting place of all forms of intelligence, where innovation will be a guiding force bringing about a change in the way men think, communicate and act. The ‘Energy of Tengri’, based on Jeremy Rifkin’s 5 pillars of the 3rd Industrial Revolution, symbolizes the future capability of human beings. It symbolizes their ability to produce as much energy as they consume, and their ability to share, multiply and distribute diverse, renewable energy sources. The ‘Energy of Tengri: Roots of the Future’ Pavilion will be the gathering place for those who come to Astana to live, discover and create. Anchored firmly in its urban context, the pavilion will rise towards the heavens and radiate out to the city and to the world beyond… It will become a new laboratory for the energy of the future.
Program
The competition brief required proposals for the use of the site after the exhibition, with the integration of residential and office accommodation, commercial facilities and research laboratories.
The theme of the International exhibition, ‘energies of the future’, addresses the possibility of using alternative and renewable energies along with the self-management of natural resources such as water and heat. The project designs needed to be, as far as practically possible, a working demonstration of this theme.
