The Caidian Sino-French eco-city project, for which Arte Charpentier took first prize in a competition in June 2017, was initially launched in 2014 through the joint signature of intent between the two governments and aims to showcase French and Chinese know-how in sustainable urban development.
With more than 11 million inhabitants, Wuhan city is faced with multiple social and environmental challenges. The Caidan Sino-French eco-city, the fruit of bilateral cooperation, is a model for sustainable urban development. It is set to become a veritable testing ground for innovatory solutions addressing the whole range of issues relating to the built environment, such as urbanism, architecture, transport, energy, landscape, water management, waste management, biodiversity etc.
The Caidian district, situated to the west of the metropolis, is bordered to its north by the River Han, a marshy landscape of more than 15km² dotted with lakes, to the south by Lakes Bailian and Houguan, and the low-lying Ma’an mountainous region.
The conservation and enhancement of the natural landscape is of prime importance for the success of the project. This will be achieved through a network of green spaces punctuating the urban environment, and serving multiple purposes such as irrigation and flood management, regulation of air temperature and humidity, outdoor sporting and leisure activity zones, urban agricultural and fishery production, and allotment areas.
The site of the eco-city is already integrated into the road network and will soon have its own intercity train station and two new subway lines. With 200 000 inhabitants, this ambitious project will be the first Sino-French « Environmental science and technology valley ».
